On December 2, 2015, Shenzhen Longsys and IBM signed a cooperation agreement on cloud platform technologies. Longsys will combine its advantages in IoT module research and production and IBM’s SuperVessel cloud platform technology and data services to help users quickly build a secure and reliable IoT cloud data services system.
As a leading provider of IoT modules and value-added software in the industry, Longsys has accumulated rich resources of R&D technologies and IPRs. It has attracted a number of renowned partners at home and abroad, such as Qualcomm. This cooperation with IBM will accelerate Longsys’ pace to shift from a traditional manufacturer to an IoT cloud data services provider.
The core technology of IBM’s SuperVessel cloud platform is OpenPOWER based that can better cope with the new challenges from the cloud computing market. This cloud platform provides a highly isolated, stable cloud development and testing environment for local application developers (ISV) and provides infrastructure services, API services and data services for the R&D and innovation of cognitive computing. Compared with other cloud platforms, SuperVessel is superior in its open technology and high-performance system resources, which will accelerate the innovation of many new applications.
IBM's latest cognitive computing technology will also be introduced in the future. Longsys IoT cloud data service system will not only be able to help customers collect, store and analyze data but release data values and implement predictive maintenance and customer insight as well for various front-end scenario applications and the process of decision making.
"Cloud computing, IoT, and cognitive computing are important research areas of IBM Research. Through years of in-depth research, we have seen great accumulations," said Dr. Shen Xiaowei, CTO of IBM Greater China and President of IBM China Research Institute, "We look forward to combining technological innovation capability with practices to promote business innovation, solve practical problems and provide high-value services to the customers.”
The Made in China 2025 released in May this year by State Council identifies the development direction for manufacturing, highlighting the significance of "smart” growth for the manufacturing industry. As a bridge connecting traditional manufacturing and information technology, IoT and cloud computing technologies will play an irreplaceable role in realizing smart manufacturing. The core of the IoT cloud platform is data collection and analysis management, which requires the cloud platform to have full capabilities to expand services, to ensure the security of business links and data, and to be more efficient in data storage, query, and analysis.
"Most domestic IoT cloud platforms enable only inter-equipment connection and App control, but such platforms fail to further develop and utilize the data from the IoT cloud services." Mr. Pang Gonghui, general manager of Longsys, said, "By working with IBM, we can leverage IBM's core technology of PaaS to offer efficient data storage, fast real-time historical data query, analysis and standard API interfaces based on device connectivity and App control, achieving personalized smart services for our customers.
The IoT cloud data services to be developed, with flexibility, on-demand services, high performance, security, and reliability as its key features, can help end-users realize rapid development of IoT related applications while using IoT modules. In addition, with the further increase in data volume, Longsys can achieve new business growth by using the flexibly efficient big data services with cost advantages, not only to create vast domestic market potential for relevant areas but also to establish a pilot benchmark for traditional IT companies to achieve a leapfrog transformation.
In the IoT industry chain, enterprises downstream such as home appliance manufacturers, are reluctant to hand over the data to platform controllers, because data is considered to be the future of "smart” development.
In this cooperation with IBM, Longsys positions itself as an "IoT cloud data services provider," who wishes to build a win-win ecosystem by using IBM's innovative technologies where Longsys can provide technical solutions for enterprises and standard interfaces and service support for developers without contending for user data with corporate customers.
Tang Qing, IBM's Vice President and Senior Partner of Global Business Consulting Services Greater China, said, "The ecosystem portrayed by Longsys contains two layers, inside and outside. On the one hand, they will realize the comprehensive integration of internal manufacturing, R & D, sales, and marketing. On the other, Longsys will build a boundary-less Ecosystem around the IoT and data applications by working together with chip enterprises in the upstream and the cooperative or star-up companies of smart home or smart city in the downstream, in the hope of promoting "smart” innovation covering the entire industrial chain. IBM hopes to build a partnership with top Chinese companies like Longsys, marring IBM advanced technologies such as IoT, cloud computing, big data analysis, and cognitive computing with China's market needs to realize win-win cooperation. Meanwhile, a larger number of Chinese enterprises will benefit from innovative development by drawing support from the rapid and healthy rising of the OpenPOWER ecosystem."
