Downloading Music to your PSP

by Jake Robertson

An increasing number of people want to know how to download music to their PSP.

The Sony PSP was not originally made to play music. It was designed to be a mobile 3D-game engine - just like the game boy was before for the 2D-game world.

But quite often with technical gadgets like these, they do get used for other things that what the creators were thinking about.

The PSP is perfectly capable of playing both music and movies and the sound quality is excellent.

You can buy songs on UMD, which is the PSP media format, although these are not commonly sold. The easiest way to get music on to your PSP is to copy files on to it from your hard drive.

If you want to put audio CD tracks on your PSP, you will have to convert the music first, by transferring it on to your PC, and then move them on to your PSP.

To do this, you would need a PSP memory card big enough to store your music files, CD ripping software if you want to convert audio CD tracks for PSP use and a USB cable to connect your computer and PSP together.

You can also get software to make the process quicker and easier. These programs will extract the music from whichever CDs you choose, convert them into the correct PSP format and then transfer them on to the PSP.

Some such software can also compile a music library on your PC for you and remember which songs you have already put on your PSP, so you won’t accidentally put the same songs on twice.

In case you use one of these pieces of software you only have to make sure that your PSP is connected to the PC and then fire up the program and hit the ’synchronize’-button.

When downloading music to your PSP, you have the advantage that it does not use a proprietary format like iTunes with iPod. This means that, although the PSP is not a full-blown music player like the iPod, it is certainly a game console with the ability to play your favorite MP3s.
